Lune's Quest
Nov. 3rd, 2010 01:07 pm The community here has been rather... lacking in action lately. So I'm just going to throw caution to the wind and introduce a NFFR comment-fic party.

In the days when the winter of Narnia was at its strongest, and Calormen was growing fierce to the south, there was a little, unnoticed country that lay between them called Archenland. Bordered by ice and fire, the mountain land had long remained unnoticed by the two great powers. The king of Archenland in those days was a man named Lectin, who did his best to shelter the descendants of the humans driven from Narnia, and protect whatever creatures dared to cross the border in search of a better life. He was a good king, one the people respected and loved, but it was well known that Lectin was growing old and his time was soon coming to an end.
Now, Lectin had a son, and the son was named Lune, and it was well known that the prince would one day become king. But Prince Lune was a bookish sort of lad, not fond of the idea of swordplay and archery (although he had been trained in both), and his father despaired that Lune might ever become the strong leader a country small as Archenland would need to defend its borders.
So one day, when the heat of summer was passing over the land, Lectin called his son to him and said, "Lune, I have devised a quest for you to prove that you are worthy of this kingship. I have heard rumours of a pack of wolves that have passed over the borders of this country from the north in search of innocent blood. Drive away this evil, and when you return, the crown will be yours."

Date: 2010-11-04 12:30 am (UTC)Lune looked up from tucking a book into his pack. "I'm just bringing the one, Ely," he said, frowning at his younger brother, who was lounging by the fire in the most comfortable chair in Lune's room.
Ely shook his head. "There's not going to be time to read it!"
"Surely when I'm camping out... by the fire at night?" Lune suggested hesitantly.
"Father said you must drive away the evil. You know what they say, evil never sleeps! That means neither will you! You're going to do nothing but hunt the evil, fight the evil, drive away the evil and come home in triumph!"
"What about dinner? Does evil ever eat? Because I'd like to have a meal at least once daily."
Ely looked annoyed. "You're not taking this seriously enough, Lune."
"Of course I am! I know what I have to do, drive away the wolves." But Lune couldn't help but sigh. No reading? No sleeping? No eating? Quests weren't exactly his idea of fun.
His brother was eying his as if he knew exactly what Lune was thinking. "That's it. I'm coming with you. You're going to need my help if you're going to succeed on this quest."

Date: 2010-11-29 05:49 pm (UTC)"How long do you suppose we'll be doing this?" Lune asked under his breath, half hoping Ely wouldn't reply.
"Don't sound so glum, brother! We're on a quest! To vanquish evil! And return home victorious!!
Lune sighed, and shifted in his saddle, turning to watch as the Anvard Keep faded into the mist.
"When you're king, Lune, will you release me from my courtly duties?!
"What? Why?" Lune glanced over at his brother. He knew Ely held no love for the Archenland court life, but to put his faith in his brother... "You don't even know if I'll ever be king,"
"Of course you will," Ely retorted, "Have a little faith, and think in an upward spiral. In any case, because I want to be an adventurer like the ones in the lore books." Ely grinned at his brother.
Lune decided not to reply. If his brother had faith in him, perhaps it was better to shut up about it.
"Did you hear that?" Ely asked sharply, reigning his horse in.
"Hear what?"
"That noise..." Ely let his gaze trail around the clearing they were in.
Lune held his breath, hoping it was nothing.
"This way!" Ely said suddenly, and urged his horse to their left, and disappeared into the forest.
