As the pool is born, the woman scrambles from the edge and stands up. The ring drops from her finger, but she does not see where it falls in the cloud of green dust that rises under her feet. The wood’s mellow green light surrounds her, urging her to sleep once more, to rest and forget. But she has slept long enough. She tastes the dust on her lips, the memory of forgotten things that burn in her blood and hum in her ears. Awake at last, she closes her eyes and steps into the water. The wood falls away.

Awesome. I love how these disconnected pieces are coming together to a whole story. She is remembering and now steps forward, into something new! The writing is lovely and evocative, beautifully descriptive.

I do hope she won't need the ring wherever she goes, but I hope that this new world will be an exciting one.

Oh, I love the way this turned out, and the word "mellow" is really perfect. I never would've thought of using the dust of the wood as a substitute for a ring, and yes, I'm also hoping she won't need that homeward ring too desperately.

Lovely. Thanks for letting me meddle last night.

Oh, clever! because of course the rings were made from the dust. :) I love as well the multiple reverbrating overtones of "She tastes the dust on her lips."

Ah, I totally thought I had commented on this! Anyway, I love the rising action through it, movement after so long, dust and blood and the humming of the rings - SUSAAAAAAAAAAAN.
